What is a Home SleepStudy?

Being diagnosed is the first step to finding a treatment that works for you. In order to diagnose sleep apnea or other sleep disorders, a patient must undergo a polysomnography (sleep study). This is typically done in a sleep lab, requiring the patient to spend the night in-lab, while the polysomnography (PSG) equipment records his or her physiological data. However, with today’s technology, it’s possible to perform the testing in your own bed—a convenient, money-saving option known as a home sleep test.

Home Sleep Study Benefits

The prospect of spending the night at a medical facility can be stressful and worrying. There’s scheduling, travel time, and the struggle to relax in an unfamiliar clinical environment. For those with kids, pets or a busy work schedule, overnighting elsewhere can create logistical problems and hassle. It’s especially inconvenient if you live far from a lab, or need special medical care such as a night nurse.

With a home sleep study, patients can get all the benefits of lab testing without any of these drawbacks. Simply turn on the machine, attach the electrodes and spend the night in your own bed. Get the feedback you need on an app the next day.

The typical price of a home sleep test or a home sleep study is only a fraction of the cost of an in-lab sleep study, and typically yields similar results in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea.
